August 31, 2010:  Sun Charity USA & UNHCR Sign Historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to merge each others resource in the relief operation for flood victims in Pakistan.
- MOU signed by Executive Director of Sun Charity USA, Ibad Rehman and the Executive Director UNHCR Marc Breslau.  
- Ibad Rehman said the MOU will expedite the relief efforts for the flood victims.
- Similar MOU was signed in 2005 between UNHCR, Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation and MQM USA for the relief efforts for the earthquake victims

According to Sun Charity USA, they and UNHCR will be hosting a telethon September 4, 2010 on national TV.  Well-known figures from Pakistan and America will appeal to the world to help the flood victims of Pakistan.

پاکستان کے انتہائی جنوبی علاقے اس وقت شدید ترین سیلاب کی زد میں ہیں جبکہ اقوامِ متحدہ نے خبردار کیا ہے کہ سیلاب سے متاثرہ علاقوں میں ستّر ہزار سے زائد بچے آلودہ پانی سے پیدا ہونے والی بیماریوں کی وجہ سے ہلاک ہو سکتے ہیں۔
فلڈ کمیشن پاکستان کے مطابق دریائے سندھ میں کوٹری بیراج پر اب بھی انتہائی اونچے درجے کا سیلاب ہے اور وہاں پانی کا اخراج نو لاکھ اکیاون ہزار کیوسک ہے۔ اس کے برعکس سکھر اور گدو بیراج پر پانی کی سطح میں کمی آ رہی ہے اور وہاں 
 بالترتیب چھ اور پونے چھ لاکھ کیوسک پانی گزر رہا ہے۔

Pakistan Army:
Approximately 60,000 troops are working day-and-night to save Pakistan. They are going where no else has, using all the resources they have. However, the helicopters and boats are few and far between.  Donate so that they can continue their work. 

Status Report of Humanitarian Efforts by Pakistan Army:
August 26, 2010: 
The Pakistan Army continues its rescue and relief operation, called "Labbaik" in Balochistan, Sindh, Southern Punjab, KPK, AK and Gilgit Baltistan around the clock.  The army is busy evacuating the stranded people in Usta Mohammad Naseerabad and shifting them to safer places. 
In collaboration with Turkish doctors, the army has established a modern Field Hospital at Dera Murad Jamali. Three additional relief camps have been established at Mehal, Bakitiar Abad and Jahal Maggassi and providing cooked flood to the flood affected people. 10 tons of relief items were distributed at Army relief camp at Rahimyar Khan and 6000 marooned people were provided cooked flood.
Seven more water points were established to provide clean drinking water at Nowshera, Ganderi and Sais Mandi. C-130 sorties are providing dry rations on daily basis to Gilgit, Sakardu and Chitral. 9 tons of dry rations have been transported to Chitral. Another 65 tons of rations have been transported to Kalam via helicopters.
 
Army Engineers have opened roads Gilgit-Sakardu, Astore-Gilgit, Gilgit-Hunda, and Gilgit-Ghizer for light traffic. Work on Dober Bridge is in progress.
August 25, 2010:  

Pakistan Army troops accomplished the following today:
·         Distributed 30 tons of dry ration at Battkundi and Chilas while 30 tons of rations have been transported to Kalam today.
·         Dispatched 35 trucks carrying relief goods to Dera Murad Jamali, including 50 tons of rations, water bottles, 5 tons of dates, 1200 tents and utensils.
·         Provided cooked food to 15000 marooned people at Army Relief Camps in Sibbi, Dera Murad Jamali, and Jacobabad.  The Army has established 7 Relief Camps at Sibbi, Daddar and Quetta for flood affected people.
·         As many as 20 helicopters are busy in evacuating flood affected people from Dera Murad Jamali, Jacobabad area to safer places.
·         A Turkish Field Hospital is being established at Dera Murad Jamali and another at Khairpur.
·         Distributed 29 tons of relief items and provided cooked food to 500 persons in Relief Camps at Rahimyar Khan.
·         150 tons of relief items at Army relief camps have been receive from Rawalpindi and Islamabad.  People from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, which have been transported to Neelam Valley and area along KKH via helicopters.
·         Dispatched 8 trucks of Relief goods to KPK.
·         More than 17000 people have been rescued from Shahdad Kot, Garhi Khairu, Thatta, Kotri, Daddu, Sewan Tando Mohammad Khan by Army. Cooked food to 38,000 flood affected people have been provided in last 48 hours.
·         Pakistan Army Engineers have launched Steel Truss Bridge at Lalpir and opened road Sanwan for traffic.

Today's Relief Activities:
a. KPK
     (1) NDMA despatched 1x truck carrying 177 tents and 100 foam mats/bed to Peshawar.
     (2) PRCS distributed 850 x Food items/NFIs in Pabbiand and Mohmand Agency.
     (3) IOM provided 3135 x tents, 6218 x tarpals and 5182 x kitchen sets to the flood affectees.
b. Punjab
     (1) NDMA despatched 3 x trucks carrying 201 x tents,80x food bags, 250 x foam mats and 250 x hygiene kits to Multan.
     (2) 1 x Australian flight carrying medical team arrived at Multan.                 (3) IOM provided 225 x tents, 100 x tarpals and 1860 x kitchen set to the flood affectees.
c. Sindh
     (1) NDMA despatched 168 tents, 340 tarpals through C-130 sortie to Jacobabad.
     (2) PRCS distributed 350 x tents in Khairpur and Larkana.
     (3) Naval Rescue teams rescued 1200 individuals in Shikarpur and Larkana.
     (4) IOM provided 100 x tents, 8519 x tarpals and 2557 x kitchen sets to the flood affectees.
d. Balochistan. IOM provided 323 kitchen sets to the flood affectees.
e. GB.
     (1) NDMA despatched 465 bags atta through C-130 sorites to Gilgit.
     (2) Road Skardu-Gilgit has been restored for traffic.
     (3) PAF C-130 evacuated 18 individuals from Gilgit.
f. AJ &K. NDMA despatched 5 x trucks carrying 3660 blankets, 230 tarpals, 250 hygiene kits, 100 foam mats to Muzaffarabad.
g. Misc.
     (1) A high ranking team of USAID and EU each visited NDMA and were updated on the latest flood situation by Chairman.
     (2) 3 flights from friendly countries transported relief goods was under:                 (a) Yeman - Islamabad               (b) UAE - Multan                  (c) KSA - Karachi 
       (3) Saudi Arabia has sent a Search and Rescue team which will join the rescue/relief activities.

Food:
  • The Pakistani Army has established four relief camps in Naseerabad and are serving hot meals and medical treatment.
  • Pakistan Army has sent 180 tons of ration, 5800 tents, and medicines costing Rs. 2 million and 26 tons of water to flood affected areas of Naseerabad.
  • 536 tons of relief items have been dispatched from Karachi to Sukkur, Kashmore, Jacobabad and Shikarpur.
  • More than 2,000 victims from Rahim Yar Khan served hot meals and fodder to 2,150 livestock.
  • A total of 470 tons of relief items worth Rs.17.5 million have been sent to Southern Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KPK and Gilgit-Baltistan from Lahore.
  • 273 flood victims were evacuated from Kalam and 20,903 kgs of food was shifted via helicopter.
  • 3 tons of dry foods and 2,300 water bottles were distributed in Nowshera Kalan and Pabbi.
  • Serving hot meals in about 100 relief camps in Muzaffargarh, Layyah and Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan.
Medical Camps:
  • Medical camps have been established in Ghotki, Kashmore and Hyderabad.
  • Two medical camps have been established in Sukkur.
  • Treatment being provided at Medical camps in Nowshera, Charsada, and Risalpur by an additional 53 Army doctors.
Infrastructure:
  • Another two sorties of C-130, carrying 6000 litters diesel and food were sent to Gilgit Baltistan. Since August, the commodities are being provided to Gilgit-Baltistan through C-130.
  • FWO have launched bridges at Kalyal Nulah and Dubari Nullha, and Basham and reopened the KKH for light traffic.

    United Nations:
    Joint Flood Emergency Response in Punjab
    UN agencies in Punjab are providing assistance and relief goods in eight affected districts Muzafargarh, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Layyah, Mianwali, Rahimyarkhan, Bhakkar, Jhang and Khushab. United Nations RC 'Office under Delivering as One' established mechanism of coordination with local and provincial government mobilized and activated all agencies.  The following compiled details (03 – 22 August) are the result of joint efforts of all UN agencies in Punjab under Delivering as One.
    The Provincial Coordination Officer (PCO), coordinated with NGOs, Media and other institutions to streamline activities, a flow of information established to feed all agencies to help them for their interventions by sharing situation report/ data. All agencies started sharing information with PCO for onward sharing with government counterparts. PCO is also facilitating OCHA focal person in Multan and providing assistance and support from provincial headquarter Lahore.  
    The following is updated information of major activities undertaken till 20th August, 2010 by different UN agencies in Punjab.
     United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA):
    • After geographical assessment of flood affected areas. UNFPA deployed four mobile service units with female health care providers at Sultan Colony, Boys Higher secondary school, Girls, and BHU 518.  RHC Chowk Sarwar along with 3 mobile units are providing 24/7 maternal health services. They have conducting 141 safe deliveries, 7242 antenatal consultations and post partum care, 10 C-section referrals. These centers are functional under supervision of Female Medical Officer and EDO Health, Muzfargarh.
    • Supported LHWs outreach camping of 24 vehicles with deployment of 200 LHWs and 20 LHSs by provision of POL and other support. They are giving milk to mothers and under 5 children and undertaking registration of pregnant women.
    • UNFPA Country Office sent medicine, 500 hygiene kits, and 200 newborn kits which were distributed among families in camps.
    • EDO Health was authorized to procure locally need based medicines and supplies and an amount of Rs. 700,000 allocated.
    World Health Organization (WHO):
    • WHO has developed closed liaison with health department at provincial level;
    • Immediately provided 35 Emergency Medical Kits which is sufficient to treat 6000 patients for basic health services;
    • Provided 25 cholera kits which is sufficient for 1000 patients;
    • Arranged 150 anti-venom vials to cater the needs of districts to treat snake-bite cases
    • WHO is analyzing data of diseases based on information sent by EDOs Health to D.G. Office on daily basis. This data helps to identify trends.
    • WHO is developing capacity of 5 pharmacists from health department to move them in flood affected areas.
    • It is also hiring surveillance officers for monitoring of relief activities in these areas.
    United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP):
    UN World Food Program is providing food items to estimated 700,000 people (102,000 families) for support in 8 districts. These food items will be wheat floor (80 kg bag), vegetable oil (3.7 kg) and High Energy Biscuits (2.25. kg), initially for one month. It has distributed food items among 5500 families and distribution is continuous.
    UNICEF:
                                                        Health & Nutrition
    ·   Out of the total 65,003 patented provided health services in nine districts on 20-08-2010, 21% were skin diseases, ARI 18% and diarrhoea 15%.
    ·   72 cartons of Zinc Sulphate, 1050 cartons of BP5 Biscuits, ORS 60 Pallets, 5000 CDKs 230 tents, Water Purification Tabs (4-5 litres) 142 packs and for 1 litre 90 packs have been distributed to all seven district i.e. Mianwali, Bhakkar, DG Khan, M. Garh, Layyah, Rajan Pur, RY Khan, Khushab, Multan.
    ·   Health education implementation has been started in district Muzaffargarh with joint efforts of UNICEF and National Programme for PHC/FP. Mass community education started through announcements on 30 vehicles of LHW programme. Registration of under 5 children, pregnant and lactating women’s is in process in all relief centres of Muzaffargarh district
    ·    On 20 August, preventive health services provided in 9 affected districts included BCG 637, OPV 3928, Penta 1358, measles 5276, TT 902 and Vitamin A supplementation to 4096 children.
    WASH:
    ·        121,793 affected people (including 42,628 children) provided with safe drinking with the help of water tankers in district Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Khushab, Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur on 22nd August.
    ·   200,000 Aqua tablets, 6 Tarpaulin rolls, 208 Nerox filters, 870 Hygiene kits, 50,000 PUR sachets, 3 water purification units, 20 water bladders (5,000 L), 21 water bladders (10,000 L) provided to implementing partners for onward distribution and installation in relief centers and  communities. 15,000 soap bars for DGKhan & 8,000 soap bars for Rajanpur were purchased and distributed through LHWs.
    ·  7,000 family hygiene kits provided to implementing partners for onward distribution in communities.
    Child Protection:                                                                                                                                
    ·         1403 children are registered at 5 Child Friendly Spaces in Multan, Muzaffargarh and Rahim Yar Khan. Out of them 8 are separated and 43 are orphan children. All of them receive recreational and non-formal education services, 513 children received psycho social care. 1 missing child was reunified with the family. Counselling services were provided to 35 adults in camps.
    ·    Psycho social support provided to 513 children in 5 relief camps and counselling services provided to 35 adults
    ·    8 separated and 43 orphan children registered and one missing child was traced and reunited with the family.
    ·    Rapid assessment is ongoing in Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Mianwali and Rajanpur districts. Detailed information is being gathered regarding separated and orphan children. Majority of the orphan children are not due to flood and they are  taking care by extended family members
    Education:                                                                                                              
    ·         Total number of partially/fully damaged schools in 14 Districts is 3228 that includes primary schools 2537, secondary 518, and high/higher secondary 178.
    ·     Total number of IDP camps established in schools in 14 districts is  1889
    ·     Shelter schools are functional in all major relief camps and IDP camps in Rahim Yar Khan. Shelter schools are run by government teachers with support of ‘School in a Box’ and ‘Recreational’ kits provided by UNICEF.
    International Organization for Migration (IOM):
     International Organization for Migration has provided 6000 blankets, 6000 plastic sheets of big size and 3000 kitchen sets for daily usage. It has already distributed 1300 in Muzafargarh and going to other districts too.
      UNAIDS:
    UNAIDS and UNICEF are coordinating with Punjab AIDS Control Programme (PACP) and NGOs providing care and support services to people living with HIV (PLHIV) in flood affected districts in Punjab to establish the number of PLHIV who were taking Anti Retroviral (ARV) medicines, but after the floods do not have access to and are in urgent need of (ARVs). Hopefully by 16-Aug we will be able to have a clear picture of the AVR requirement of patients in these districts UNAIDS and UNICEF are also assessing the nutritional requirements of families of PLHIV after the floods, as PLHIVs from these areas are from poor backgrounds, and mostly have additional nutritional requirements under even normal circumstances.
    UNAIDS:
    RC office remained in touch with District Disaster Management teams of UNDP in Sialkot, Jhang and Rajanpur. These team provided technical support to district administration and played active role in Jhang as flood hit a large area in the second week of August.
    Assessment:
    UNOCHA has completed Rapid Multicluster Assessment in four districts. The report has been shared with the Relief Commissioner Punjab and other partner agencies. It will help to plan and intervene accordingly; however other assessments are going on. UNICEF in collaboration with Bureau of Statistics (BoS) and technical support from OCHA is conducting McRAM.
    OCHA is also conducting Initial Vulnerability Assessment Mapping in the flood affected districts.
    Team Clusters:
    Provincial Coordination Team is meeting regularly, it has conducted three meetings and clusters have been formed on Health, Nutrition, Food, Education, Shelter and WASH.  OCHA has established a Provincial Hub in Multan where all representatives from UN agencies and local NGOs meet. UN agencies have set up their offices in Multan to support and monitor flood relief activities.   
    Advocacy:
    Program Communication Officer UNICEF has developed information material for LHWs and community. This leaflet will be used to create awareness among communities to take preventive measures.  UN Provincial Coordination Officer is also designated as spokesperson to share information with government and media. He has participated in three TV programs. PCO is in contact with beat-reporters and news agencies.
    Coordination with Government and NGOs:
    RC Office has established contacts with DG PDMA/ Relief Commissioner Punjab, OCHA focal person and other relief organizations and NGOs providing their services in affected areas. These NGOs are Red Crescent Society, Action Aid, Aurat Foundation, Awami Jamhori Fourm, SYCOP Muzafargarh, EHD Multan, SPO Lahore, Development Network, Chamber of Commerce and other institutions. Chief Minister Punjab and Federal Minister for Population Welfare visited UNFPA camps in Muzafargarh.
